Using this Collection:

TIPS FOR SUCCESSFUL SEARCHES

Searching the Collection Files will yield results in any of the collections from Abba HillelSilver listed here. Researchers can then select the result they would like to see, and a PDF of the folder in which the result is located will open in another tab. Researchers will then need to search the PDF for the appearance of a specific term, but they will be able to see the entire contents of that folder. Researchers should also carefully review the inventories for each collection. This will provide a broader look at the collections and likely lead to finding additional materials relevant to the researcher’s topic of interest.

Searching the Collection Files will not yield results from the contents of the audiovisual recordings. Researchers interested in those materials should review the titles and dates of the sermons, events, and speaking engagements.

Additional information related to these sermons, events, and speaking engagements may be found in the other collections listed here.

The AJA’s digital sites are comprised of collections that have been digitized and presented as searchable PDFs. Please note the following:

INVENTORIES:

  • The inventory is based on the inventory associated with the physical collection held at the AJA.
  • Each Inventory has “Series” associated with them.
  • After clicking on the Series title, you will see a list of folders. Each folder is digitized and will contain all the documents in that folder.

SEARCHING:

When you enter a term in the search box, you will be searching every document in the digital collection. Returns will show all folders that contain your search term.

Ways to search:

  • General Searching: The search engine uses string matching to determine search results. That means, for each query term, the primary rule is this: what you put in the form text box is what the search engine will look for in full or in part.
Example: searching for "wash" will match wash, washer, Washington, etc.
Example: searching for “anti” will match antisemites, anticipated, anti-Semitism
  • Capitalization: Case sensitivity of the search term is not retained in searches by
    the search engine.
Example: searching for “year” will match YEAR and Year and year.

SEARCHING WITHIN THE FOLDER:

  • Once you have pulled up a folder, it will be possible to search the pages in the PDF for your search term. Depending on your browser, you can either click on the magnifying glass icon or use the “Ctrl F” shortcut.
