INVENTORY

Series: 4

MS-5490 Daniel Jeremy Silver Audio Collection. 1956-1989

Scope and Content Note: The Daniel Jeremy Silver Audio Collection consists of recordings of the rabbi's sermons from 1956 to 1989 and recordings of talks at congregational meetings of groups such as the Temple Women's Association and Temple Men's Club and other congregational events. 679 sermons are listed on the inventory as received from the donor, but a few of those were missing from the accession when it was brought into WRHS; these are identified in the inventory. There are over 780 digitized items in the collection. Sermons 1-379 exist on both phonodisc and reel-to-reel tape (usually 10.5 inch, but some are smaller sizes). Sermons 380-679 are on cassette. The congregational events are on phonodisc, reel-to-reel tape, or cassette. This collection will be useful to researchers studying the history of the Jewish community in Cleveland, Ohio, the practice of Reform Judaism in Northeast Ohio and the United States, and the spiritual and intellectual leadership of Rabbi Daniel Jeremy Silver. Because Rabbi Silver spoke on a variety of topics of interest to members of his congregation, researchers will find here sermons or talks on both international and local events. Among the topics covered are ancient, medieval, and modern Jewish thought; Zionism, Israel, and the Middle East in the mid twentieth century; the Holocaust and the Jewish heritage of Eastern Europe; Soviet Jewry; local and national elections; race and social conditions in Cleveland; and Jewish holidays. It should be noted that the inventory of the 679 sermons was provided by the donor. Titles of the sermons were originally taken from that inventory and were compared to the titles written on the boxes. Because there was only a partial inventory of the recordings of the various congregational events, titles and dates were taken from the labels on the reels or cassettes, as well as the contents of the recordings. Some of the titles have been updated and no longer match the original inventory.
